Body-corrosion products can be divided into preventive and repair materials. Preventive protection includes Movil preservative, ML cavity wax, bitumen underbody coating and stone-chip coating. Repair products include rust converter and universal primer. Each material has a specific application and performance profile.
Movil and ML products are intended for internal panels and hidden cavities. Both are sprayed through extension tubes with specialized nozzles. Dry the vehicle thoroughly before application. Dust, dirt and loose rust can accumulate inside cavities, and water trapped in porous contamination is difficult to displace. The product’s water-displacing action is intended for residual moisture, not standing water. Both formulations contain corrosion inhibitors that slow or stop corrosion at existing spots.
Although Movil and ML serve similar purposes, they differ. Movil was developed in the Soviet Union by institutes in Moscow and Vilnius—hence the name—and was originally intended for brush or roller application. ML is a later German-developed cavity-protection system designed from the outset for spraying. It applies without foaming and forms a continuous film. Its higher creep allows it to penetrate narrow seams, lower door edges and welded joints while leaving drain holes open. ML forms a thinner film and therefore generally has a lower consumption rate.
Both products remain soft rather than curing to a hard film. This makes them well suited to protected internal cavities, but only a temporary choice for exposed surfaces where abrasion will remove them. Use a durable underbody or stone-chip coating on exterior areas.
Use bitumen underbody coating and stone-chip coating on exposed exterior areas. Bitumen coatings are normally used on the underbody, while stone-chip coatings protect sills and wheel-arch edges. Bitumen coating has lower abrasion resistance and is therefore less suitable for areas constantly struck by sand and gravel.
Prepare the surface before coating: remove contamination and degrease it. Mechanically remove rust, treat any remaining corrosion with rust converter and only then apply the protective coating. Covering active corrosion may slow it, but will not reliably stop it.
Bitumen and stone-chip coatings may be applied to properly prepared bare metal or existing paintwork in accordance with the product instructions. After it has fully dried, the specified stone-chip coating can be topcoated with a compatible paint system.
First remove loose rust with a wire brush or abrasive paper. Apply KERRY® Rust Converter to the cleaned area and allow it to react for 40–60 minutes, or for the period stated on the current label. A gel formulation is preferable on vertical surfaces because it remains in place long enough to react. Once the corrosion has been converted to a stable phosphate layer, rinse as directed, dry the surface and immediately apply a protective coating such as KERRY® Universal Primer. Rust converter is a pretreatment, not a final protective coating: it treats existing rust but does not prevent new corrosion unless the surface is subsequently protected.
