Replacing brake pads is easier, faster and more thorough when the correct KERRY® workshop chemicals and lubricants are used.
If the wheel bolts or nuts cannot be loosened, apply KERRY® KR-940 Penetrating Lubricant. It penetrates tight threaded joints, softens rust and restores movement. Allow several minutes for the product to work before trying the fastener again. KERRY® KR-940-2 Moly Penetrating Lubricant adds molybdenum disulfide to reduce friction further. For heavily seized joints, KERRY® KR-940-3 Freeze-Shock Penetrating Lubricant rapidly cools the parts; the resulting thermal shock helps break the corrosion bond.
After the wheel fasteners have been loosened, raise and safely support the vehicle. Treat the jack screw with KERRY® KR-944-1 Graphite Grease to reduce friction and protect it from corrosion during storage. The grease withstands high contact loads, resists water wash-off and protects against moisture and road chemicals.
Remove the wheel and undo the caliper guide fasteners, using penetrating lubricant if necessary. Check the removed pads for even wear. Greater wear on one pad may indicate binding caliper guide pins. Remove the bracket and thoroughly clean the guide pins, bores, brake mechanism and rotor with KERRY® KR-965 Brake and Parts Cleaner.
Apply KERRY® brake-caliper piston and guide-pin grease to the cleaned guide pins to prevent binding and support reliable caliper movement. Apply KERRY® KR-542 Brake Parts Lubricant to the backs of the pads and the pad contact points on the bracket. If anti-squeal shims are fitted, remove them, lubricate the pad backs and reinstall the shims.
Never apply lubricant to the friction surfaces of the brake pads or rotors. Contamination can cause loss of braking performance. If lubricant reaches a friction surface, clean it thoroughly with brake cleaner.
Reassemble the brake mechanism in accordance with the vehicle manufacturer’s procedure and torque specifications. Before installing the wheel, apply a thin, controlled layer of KERRY® KR-937-11 Copper High-Temperature Lubricant to the appropriate wheel-fastener and hub contact areas, keeping it away from friction surfaces and following the vehicle manufacturer’s requirements. This helps prevent seizure and makes future removal easier, particularly with alloy wheels.
These straightforward KERRY® workshop-chemical practices can make brake-pad replacement cleaner and easier and help prevent problems during later service. Brakes are safety-critical: if you are uncertain about any step, have the work performed by a qualified technician.
