Choosing an Anti-Corrosion Coating

Different areas of a vehicle body face different corrosion and impact hazards. Effective protection therefore requires a coating selected for the specific location rather than one universal material.

1Underbody Protection

KERRY® KR‑955, KR‑956 and KR‑957 bitumen underbody coatings form an even, impact-resistant film that blocks oxygen and aggressive road contamination. The coating remains flexible in cold weather and resists cracking and delamination. Apply it to a properly prepared, clean and dry surface in accordance with the product instructions. Remove loose dirt and rust before treatment. Bitumen coating is best suited to the underbody; sills and wheel arches receive heavier stone and sand impact and require a more abrasion-resistant stone-chip or wheel-arch coating.

2Sill Protection

Stone-chip coating is intended for sills, lower door areas, wing edges and aprons. The KERRY® range includes smooth KR‑970 and orange-peel-textured KR‑971. Their protective properties are similar; the textured surface is particularly suitable where the coating will be topcoated. Apply to a clean, dry and properly prepared surface for maximum adhesion. After drying, the coating retains resilience and flexibility, allowing it to absorb impacts from small stones. It may also be used on suitable underbody areas, while wheel arches benefit from a thicker dedicated sound-damping coating.

3Wheel-Arch Protection

KERRY® KR‑972 Sound-Damping Underbody Coating is designed for wheel arches. It forms a substantially thicker layer than a conventional aerosol stone-chip coating, increasing resistance to stone and sand impact while providing additional sound damping. Zinc flakes reinforce the flexible coating and, on properly prepared bare steel, contribute additional sacrificial corrosion protection.

4Hidden Cavities

For hidden cavities, KERRY® offers Movil KR‑945, KR‑946 and KR‑948, zinc-enhanced Movil KR‑948‑1 and ML Cavity Wax KR‑949. Movil was originally developed for brush or dip application and was later adapted for spraying. Its long service history and accessible price make it a familiar cavity-protection material. The zinc grade adds sacrificial electrochemical protection where it contacts steel.

ML Cavity Wax is formulated specifically for spray application. Its excellent creep helps it reach narrow seams and welded joints, and it forms an even, continuous film without blocking properly maintained drain openings. Modern corrosion inhibitors support protection in areas that cannot be reached with a conventional solid coating.

Movil and ML remain soft and do not cure to a completely hard film. This allows them to creep and protect hidden cavities, but makes them unsuitable as durable exterior coatings exposed to continuous abrasion.
